Comprehensive manual annotation of the Schizosaccharomyces pombe genome is one of the primary goals of the PomBase project. Dedicated curators and researchers can manually annotate genes for a given paper using the online tool Canto. Canto allows a curator (either a PomBase curator or a researcher from the S. pombe community) to manually annotate genes with functions, phenotypes, interactions, etc. These annotations are then verified by a PomBase curator before getting accepted into the database.
Further details about the community curation process can be found on the PomBase website.
At the beginning of each release cycle for Ensembl Genomes, these annotations are then imported and used to annotate the genes in preparation for the next release.
